RECENT RIDER OF THE MONTH - Harriet Lamb
This month's rider of the month is dressage rider and judge Harriet Lamb.
When and why did you start riding?
I started riding when I was about 7. We didn't have a pony, so I rode the neighbour's donkey (Tufty). He could jump amazingly high and was very, very long suffering. I got my first pony when I was 10 and did a lot of hunting in Ireland. The rules out hunting were simple ? anyone who knocks down a wall has to rebuild it. It was great for the character (and the riding). The same pony went on to win the Northern Ireland Area Trials completely from left field. My love of riding was born. Tell us about your current horse(s) and what you do.
I currently ride JK Lightsome (Jaybee), by JK Lucas. Samantha Winn competed him to Medium level and then he sat in the paddock for several years. I bought him last year and we have worked our way steadily back up through the grades again. He is without exception the most spooky horse I have ever ridden, but would not bat an eyelid at a Fonterra truck coming at him at 120 km/hour. I think I have yet to fully understand the Hanoverian brain. What is your highlight or best equestrian experience to date?
When I was a child, I went to riding school. One of the riding school ponies was an incredibly hot mare called Blaze. She was always tense and very strong when any of the kids rode her. One day the owner of the riding school was watching and had seen enough and told the kid to get off. He got on, tied the reins in a knot and proceeded to ride her without any hands at all. We all expected the mare to bolt for miles. But from the moment he got on, the mare was transformed. She calmly did whatever he asked (walk, trot, canter, jump) from leg aids alone. It was a wonderful display of riding and really sparked my interest in horses. Who is your dressage and/or equestrian idol and why?
There are so many equestrian people that I admire for so many different reasons, that I cannot pick out one name. I owe a great deal to Irish rider Eric Smiley who was my mentor when I was a teenager. But I admire any rider who produces a great performance on a horse, no matter what the level. If you could choose 1 item of tack/clothing (and money is no object) what would it be and why?
We seem to be at the stage where we are trying to simplify our tackroom rather than adding to it, but a pair of those really expensive Ariat boots would be very nice. What are your short term goals?
My/our short term goal is to compete at Dressage Nationals 2010 without disgracing ourselves. If you could give one piece of advice to the horse world, what would it be?
Keep it forward.
Dressage Waikato President - Nicky Hallen
We caught up with dressage rider Nicky Hallen to find out a little more about her and her passion for horses.
When and why did you start riding?
I started riding when I was about 11 yrs old. The neighbours had horses and I just fell in love with them. I remember nagging mum and dad so much they relented and bought me a pony. Tell us about your current horse(s) and what you do.
I have Yogi (Mystic Magic) and Foxy. Yogi is 19 yrs old, I guess he's in semi retirement, he can do all the Grand Prix movements so am keeping him going to prefect the advanced movements. Foxy is 5yrs old. I bred her, she is by Landioso and out of a Spectacular Phantom mare. Of course my hopes for her would be to take her has far as possible in dressage. She has great paces and an awesome riding temperament (she can be a little grumpy on the ground). If she was a car I would liken her to a Mercedes. She does give me an amazing feel. What is your highlight or best equestrian experience to date?
I don't really have a fantastic competiton experience, I guess riding the G.P.test on Yogi was pretty cool. For me just getting out there on the horses everyday and improving is a highlight. Who is your dressage and/or equestrian idol and why?
I get a real buzz seeing all riders giving it there best shot, at the moment though I quite like Hans Peter Minderhoud, he came 4th in the Rolex FEI World Cup, 2009 If you could choose 1 item of tack/clothing (and money is no object) what would it be and why?
Why stop at tack/clothing, I would like the horse that Hans Peter Minderhoud rode, and of course Hans to teach me how to ride it. If that's not possible though a Patent leather bridle and riding boots would be nice What are your short term goals?
I would like to get my young horse out competing If you could give one piece of advice to the horse world, what would it be?
Never give up, set personal goals, dont worry about what your fellow competitors are up to.
