Pre-season Preparation Programme
This is a three day course that is similar to a Pony Club Camp. The goal of the program is to provide riders that are competing or would like to start competing with a base of horsemanship and riding instruction.
As September/October is the start of showing season, the focus will be on show preparation and each course will be customised for the students enrolled i.e. focused on eventing, dressage or show jumping or showing.
This is an example of an eventing based programme:
Day 1: The basics of riding a good dressage test (We will have a full arena set up)
Day 2: Show Jumping Course skills
Day 3: Introduction to X-Country - i.e water, banks, ditches, logs and roll tops
These are examples of the Horsemanship portion of the programme:
Day 1: Bandaging and the needs and reasons for different bandaging
Day 2: Lunging how to and why ( Riding School horse will be used if own horse too tired)
Day 3: Preperation for shows i.e plaiting, grooming, tack etc ....
Student feedback about previous Learn-To-Compete courses (Pre-season Preparation Programme):
"Thursday 6th April was the day Emma, Memphis, Annie, Jordan, Samara, Melissa and myself (Victoria), had been looking forward too. The opportunity to learn new skills and ride and jump had arrived. It was Learn to Compete day.
We all arrived at the Riding Centre early to get the horses in and then we fed them.
Our first session of the day was about Kayleen telling us about horse and pony care.
Next we got Jay, Shorty and Little Sally tacked up to learn how to lunge a horse or pony. With Emma’s help I was the first to lunge Jay. I enjoyed learning how to do this. Everyone then got into the arena area and split into groups and lunged Jay, Shorty and Little Sally in turn.
Following this we took the horses to the wash bay and gave them a hose down and dried off then headed back into the Arena area to walk the horses around as they dried off well. This was a good opportunity to walk our selected Dressage Course for our test later
With Jay, Shorty and Little Sally back to their yards we had a quick lunch.
Time to tack up our horses. I was riding Holly for the rest of the sessions. With everyone mounted we headed down the hill with Kayleen to the big sand area.
There was an arena marked out at one end for our Dressage Tests. We all got to ride our selected test in turn as a practice then went to the
Together end of the sand area where a series of jumps were set up and we got to ride the course. Helena arrived about this time and helped Kayleen, as she was unable to ride because she had a broken wrist.
With a ride through the Show Jumping course completed it was time to take our turns at riding the Derby section. This entailed riding our selected Dressage Test then on to the Show Jumping Test. After clearing the last jump it was a gallop off the sand area onto the Polo field through the gate and into the Cross Country area to ride the short Cross Country course set by Kayleen. As each rider finished they walked their horse around on the polo field until everyone had completed their test.
I was pleased with my effort as I think all the others were as we headed back up the hill.
With our horses hosed down and dried we took them back to their selected paddocks.
Our very enjoyable day ended with a short session where we discussed our days riding with Kayleen where we got to say what we achieved etc. Our thanks go to Kayleen for arranging this great day for us."
