South East Waikato Branch
of the NZ Mounted Games Association

The Waikato Combined Equestrian Group is very proud to announce the addition of the South East Waikato Branch of NZ Mounted Games Association as a new affiliated group. Mounted Games are a fairly new addition to equestrian sports. They are the brain child of H.R.H. Prince Philip who was asked to devise a sport for children who could not afford an expensive, well bred pony. In 1957, the first Mounted Games Championship for the Prince Philip Cup was held at the English Horse of the Year Show, at Harringay Arena in North London. The sport had immediate popularity and was taken up by the ponyclubs but with the associated age restriction. To accomodate the demand to remove the age limits a Mounted Games Association of Great Britain was formed in 1984. Since then the sport has continued to grow in popularity and the International Mounted Games Association now has members in 20 countries, of which New Zealand is one.
The games require courage, speed and agility. Some games will require the rider to hang from the side of a pony at high speed to place or change over objects, demonstrating skilled horsemanship and precise hand-to-eye coordination. Others invlove vaulting off and on a pony at the gallop. Games may be individual, in pairs or teams.
Last year a small but dedicated team travelled to compete on borrowed horses at the Sydney 2008 World Mounted Games and to the suprise of the world came home the winners.
This year another development squad is under scrutiny with the selection being made after the NZ Horse of the Year competition. This year a team of five riders and two reserves, a coach and manager will travel to the World Mounted Games in England in July.
Anyone interested in joining this fast and exciting sport should contact Joy Hooker ph 843-1763
Sponsors interested in joining the sucess of this team should contact Denise Bentall ph 06 873 4494.
Get into the Spirit of Christmas!!
What has Christmas beome today? Some associate it with the financial anxiety and brain strain related to what to give those that already have everything. Others are thinking about the new and exciting toys they are going to receive. But hark back in time. Didn't good old St Nic give to the needy? Why not restore a little of the real spirit of Christmas and help those that have nothing to celebrate? Check out some simple ways that you can contribute to assisting those horses that have been dealt a rough hand in life. And don't miss out on their fabulous Christmas Card series. Go to the SPCA Horse Welfare website.
The International League for the Protection of Horses was founded in 1927 to prevent the ill treatment of horses exported to Europe for slaughter. The New Zealand branch has recently changed its name to the
Auckland SPCA Horse Welfare Auxiliary Inc. and remains committed to equine welfare throughout the country.
